Guidelines for Choosing the right Therapist

If you are going through a rocky period in your relationship and seeking to try to resolve problems together therapy can be very helpful.  If you are separated or divorcing you may find that the support and solutions of a skilled counselor can be most helpful and insightful at a crucial time in your life.

How do I find a therapist?

The Peachy Network has experienced therapists who come to us through recommendations, so we know that they are respected by their peers. The network has a good deal of information about each member.  You can read about their education and experience, look at their reviews and see a video which should give you a good sense of the counselor’s style.  Most therapists will offer the first session for free so you can see if it is a good fit.  It is probably a good idea to interview more than one candidate.

What are the licenses and what do they represent?

There are a variety of licenses for counselor’s in California:

  • Marriage Family Therapist –specializes in couple and families   MFT
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker-specializes in working in the social system   LCSW
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor-General counseling, individual therapy   LMHC
  • Psychologist-has a PhD, works with general population PsyD
  • Psychiatrist –typically does not do therapy but prescribes medication   Medical Doctor    MD

How do they plan my treatment?

Most therapists have a theoretical framework for their treatments.  You may want to check as you are interviewing potential candidates.  Here are the most common theoretical approaches:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral – replacing negative thoughts or destructive behavior
  • Psychodynamic – exploring childhood and the past to give insight into behavior.  This is usually long-term therapy.
  • Humanistic – client centered therapy involving self-acceptance
  • Gestalt – focuses on unresolved issues and emotional well-being

How much do therapists charge?

If you are looking to do traditional therapy or couples’ therapy, the hourly rates usually range from about $125-$200.  Some therapists work on a sliding scale, meaning that depending on your income they may reduce their fees.  If you are appointed a therapist by the court, for a child custody dispute for example, and you need to have a home evaluation, this can be very pricey.  Most therapy sessions are once a week for 50 minutes.  But in times of crisis some patients want to come in more frequently.

Many therapists accept insurance so you should check with your insurance company to see if they cover mental health care and if the counselor you choose is in network.

Top questions to ask a therapist

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • Do you work with couples, families, individuals?
  • What are your payment options?
  • Where are you located?
  • Do you do virtual therapy sessions during the COVID 19 pandemic?
  • What special expertise can you bring to my situation?
